I think I’ve read about troops blackening their armour, and I don’t know how shiny your armour would be after a season of hard campaigning. They could still hide on a reverse slope or something? *shrug*
@KazeKoichi You Russians, so unorthodox. Oh wait, I mean so Orthodox.
@KazeKoichi: Huh I did not know that. In the spirit of inclusiveness I think we should have Christmas twice a year, double the holidays, double the presents
@Mercy: I don’t see any resemblance between Atom Ant and Sun Ce. One of them wears a ridiculous orb on his head with antlers sticking out, the other is an insect
Thanks Ming… the old school drawing style tends to be pretty stylized, but they’re actually my favorite to use for reference for period armor, weapons, etc. As for the modern/KOEI depictions, I suppose they do what they need to do to sell video games, but some of it does get pretty ridiculous, like this Chinese redhead fighting in a miniskirt.
I have nothing to say about Ce, but as far as I know, Sun Quan was really looked like foreigner. He was red head with green eyes – not normal for Chinese.
But a possibility…they did find whole Asterix villages mummified in the Gobi desert, with tall blonde and redhead women in big tresses, mustachioed warriors in tartan pants…etc…heroic warriors, but notoriously gay…(Tocharians Celts taught China horse husbandry).
But Gay…very gay: http://www.oglaf.com/honor/
Reportedly, Romans where NOT amused!
Hannibal and his elephants where a piece of work…
(Carthaginians where fat shopkeepers,
they used Gauls and various Celts for war.)
You guys have actually brought up one of the things I’ve been worrying about – how to depict the green-eyed Sun Quan… still haven’t made up my mind, but at least I won’t have to deal with that for awhile
Koad, on the subject of Sun Quan, Paul Guo (who did the San Three Kingdoms comic) just rolled with it — two of the strips specifically had the hair/eye color as the joke.
I definitely plan on keeping Sun Quan’s red hair and green eyes, my main concern is how to get those unusual features across in a black-and-white comic, preferably without resorting to corny devices like having someone say “hey that dude has green eyes” every couple panels…
Lol… well it’s certainly not my intention to change his chin. But drawing faces more consistently is one of the main things I’m working on, so hopefully this area will improve as the comic moves along.
I think as long as you sit still you can hide with metal on you just fine.
And thanks, but we crasy Russians are selebrating Christmas two weeks later.

Does anyone else thing Sun Ce’s helmet makes him look a little like Atom Ant?

Sometime the insect seem more real…
The ancient artists tended to exaggerate the Mongolian features:

While the modern cartoonists make the Chinese heroes look like New Yorkers:

Your drawings are the most realistic, in my opinion…

No more ridiculous than Xiao Qiao curbstomping Lu Bu… (Although, in fairness, that IS a rarity in any DW game.)

I read somewhere that Ching Shih(郑氏) the admiral of the largest
pirate fleet ever(1500 ships) was actually a red head…
Make sense…she died filthy rich, of course, most other pirates(except Somalis), end up swinging from a rope!

Can’t think of any advice about the eyes, but perhaps you could give him a hairstyle that suggests “not Asian.”
To make him look Irish?
I really have no idea/
You mean something like this?
Imagine meeting THIS in a dark alley:

I’d go with the chin in the previous page, if only because of his supposed age during this (that is, a teenager).
Yeah that’s a good idea, I’ll pay attention to that chin
